Community Kitchen

As Community Kitchens newest host site, we opened our doors for our first noontime meal on March 2, 2015. For decades, our volunteer cooks have prepared a meal on the second Monday of each month, transporting it to the United Methodist Church of North Grosvenordale. When that site closed, our church offered to take over the Monday meal every week.

Churches in our area take turns in preparing food and serving all guests who come. Joining us in this effort are East Woodstock Congregational Church, Christ Church of Pomfret, South Woodstock Baptist Church, and a pair of good-hearted people, Karen and Lou, who fill in when a fifth Monday occurs.

Founded in 1982, Community Kitchens receives donations from businesses, community groups, towns, and individuals. The non-profit corporation serves around 13,000 meals annually at its five sites. It’s “a friendly place to meet and eat”; all meals are free, and all are welcome.

Our crew welcomes help with setup on Sunday after worship, and assistance with serving and cleanup any Monday, beginning at 9 a.m. Many people pitch in, and it’s a lot of fun. Contact people are Bob Kirk and Bruce Lyman.
