Confirmation Reflections

June 8, 2014 – Confirmation Sunday

Over the course of our Confirmation program, the youth reflected on their beliefs and questions, the way their faith relates to their lives, and the gifts they bring to our community. They shared some of their reflections on Confirmation Sunday.

Elijah

I believe that God is hope. I believe that God is not a tyrant.

I am inspired by Jesus because he died for us. He had strength, and we can have it too. To me, being a follower of Jesus means to be a good person.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is my sense of humor. It brings laughter and joy to the people around me. I think this gift came from my dad.

I can share my gifts with my church community by being myself.

Graham

I believe that God is present in everyone and everything. He does not discriminate. I believe that God is not in science, but in nature. Sometimes I wonder why he lets things like war happen, or why he lets us keep destroying the planet.

The thing that most inspires me about Jesus is that even though he was threatened with death, he still stuck to what he believed in and died for it. To follow him means that we have to uphold his beliefs and love everyone and everything. Sometimes it is a challenge for me to actually show up to church and worship him. But it is a joy for me to be part of this community.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is my positive presence. I try to be upbeat and uplifting even when I’m not in the best mood, so I put a smile on my face no matter what. I try to be loving and joyful around everyone to brighten everyone’s day. I share my gifts by trying to be kind to everyone, even if I don’t know them.

Jacob

I am still figuring out who I believe God is. I know I believe God is not someone who will strike you down if you do something bad.

I think I am inspired most about Jesus when I think how so many people still follow him today, and how he had a lasting impact on earth. To me, being a follower of Jesus means to be more loving and understanding of people. I think my biggest challenge as a follower of Jesus is remembering him in my daily life.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is my sense of humor. I use it pretty much all the time. I’m not sure where this came from, because neither my mom or dad are particularly funny. I can share this gift by making people smile and laugh.

Jesse

I am figuring out what I believe about who God is and is not. I am interested in learning about different religions and trying out many different ideas to see which ones fit me.

I am inspired by Jesus because he was a supernatural being with powers not known to the world. To be his follower means to follow his teachings and to learn from lessons he taught people in his day. I am not a follower of Jesus, however I do believe in him and respect him and his teachings. My biggest joy of not following is being able to create my own path in the world. My biggest challenge is being different that way.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is a smile. Through my happiness, I can spread joy! I can share my gift by interacting with children and being supportive of my friends and family in whatever decisions they make.

Julia

I believe that God is present in Jesus sacrificing himself. I believe that God is not a cause of sadness or pain. I wonder why so many people have to suffer, when God is supposed to be watching over them.

What most inspires me about Jesus is the fact that he healed so many people of diseases and different pains. He brought a lot of joy into the world by healing people. To me, following Jesus means to try and be the best person I can be, and to help people when they are hurt. My biggest challenge is staying true to who I am. My biggest joy is seeing people’s reaction when I help them.

A gift I bring to my church community is myself, who I am, and my ability to question what I believe. I can use this gift throughout my life and in everyday situations.

Robbie

I believe that God is present in everything that is all around us, and also inside of us. I believe that God is not one man up in the clouds, waiting at the gates of heaven.

Jesus’ way of working with others to better everyone’s futures really inspires me. To follow him, for me, is to learn. As long as I follow Jesus, I will never stop learning from his wisdom. My biggest challenge is really believing all the incredible things Jesus did. Even though it is difficult, I will continue to follow him. My biggest joy is knowing that I can trust in Jesus.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is being a hard worker. If I have a job to do, you will see me working diligently to get it done well. It feels great to work at bringing something to the table. I use it whenever I or someone else needs something done. This gift came from the Lord.

Serenity

I believe that God is present in nature, for example, in the beauty of a flower. I believe that God is not a cause of harm or sadness.

I believe that Jesus is a wise teacher. I don’t believe he is meant to tell us what to do, but lets us figure it out for ourselves. To me, following Jesus means doing the right things in life and caring for all.

One of the gifts I bring to my church community is being a good listener. I can use it when someone is having a hard time and just needs to talk to someone. My loyalty can be trusted.
